My question didn't get answered - what should I do next?

Questions can go unanswered for a number of reasons.

  • Your question didn't include a Packaged Workbook (TWBX file). Refer to Tips on asking questions
  • Your question may be unclear. When asking a question try to include as much relevant information as possible. A specific question with additional information including screenshots and detailed steps of what you have tried so far is more likely to get responses from users and a correct answer.
  • The question may already be answered in another thread. Make sure to search before posting a fresh question!

How to anonymize the data in your Tableau workbook

If you are concerned about sharing confidential or private information in your Tableau workbook, one option is to anonymize the data before sharing. 📺 Check out the

video by Katie Kilroy for details.

  1. In your original Tableau workbook, do a Save As on the file, so that you leave the original document unchanged.
  2. Copy a sub-set of the real data and paste it into Excel or Google Sheets.
  3. Manually update as many columns, headings, values, etc. to make it generic.
  4. Save the Excel file and close it - if using Google Sheets you must download it as a .xlsx file.
  5. In the Tableau workbook, change the data source over to this 'fake' one and close the real one.
  6. Export the workbook as a packaged workbook.
  7. This packaged workbook is what you can share in the Community accompanying your question post to demonstrate the problem.

Tips on asking questions

❓Got a question? Well you have come to the right place!

The Community is packed with the best and brightest users and as a Community we are eager to help you out and answer your questions. But before you hit that “Ask Question” button, here are a few tips to greatly increase your chances of getting a response.

 1. Start with a Search 🔎

There are tens of thousands of questions in the Community ; there is a good chance you are not the first person to have the problem you are encountering.

2. Share what you have tried so far 💬

Fellow Community members are much more inclined to help you to find a solution when you share what you have tried so far.

Perhaps you have already spent some time attempting to resolve a Tableau error code. Including details in your question regarding the troubleshooting you have tried or the Knowledge Articles you have referenced will mean that others will not waste time in suggested steps that you’ve already tried.

Tableau Packaged Workbooks

  • If your question is in any way related to a Workbook, you are much more likely to get a response if you attach a .twbx workbook (or .tflx for Tableau Prep Flows)
  • 📌 Tip: When attaching a workbook, make sure it is a .twbx file - not a .twb (or if using Tableau Prep make sure it is a .tflx).
  • 🔏 We understand you may not want to share a confidential workbook, so one option is to anonymize it before sharing Alternatively you can use the Superstore data source that comes bundled with every Tableau install. Recreate your question using Superstore and you can share it with anyone!

Screenshots 📸 “A picture is worth a thousand words!”

If your issue is not workbook specific (for example related to Tableau Server errors, data refresh issues etc.), then a screenshot showing what you have done and what is not working is recommended.

3. Give Details and Be Specific 🗒️

Give as much relevant detail as possible when writing your question. This could include:

  • Which Tableau Product you are working with
  • What version of Tableau you are using
  • What is the desired outcome (sometimes this will be obvious - for example if you are getting a Tableau Desktop error, but for areas such as dashboard design the described outcome should be described)
  • If you are working under any restrictions. For example, if you need help with a Calculation that must be done in a certain way, be specific so that fellow Community Forum members don’t direct you towards solutions that won’t work
  • The data sources you are working with - Is it a live connection or extract?
  • If appropriate, attach an image using the paperclip icon

4. Use Topics

📑 Topics are your friend when asking questions! This allows the Questions to go to places where knowledgeable people in that Topic can see them. Remember you can always add more than one Topic to a question.

5. Got an Answer but have more questions? Make a new Question!

Great to hear you found a solution! Other users will use the answer you found to help them also. This is why we recommend that if you have any follow up questions that you create a brand new Question. This means the comments and discussions under the question are always relevant to the specific question. Feel free to link a previous question into the discussion but avoid having multiple questions within the same discussion thread. It can be difficult for other Users to have to sift through solutions if it is contained within a long discussion.

6. Keep track via your 'My Activity' page

To see your recent activity, and keep track of conversations on the Topic boards you fellow, check out your personalised My Activity page.

TABLEAU COMMUNITY ETIQUETTE GUIDE

Our Guiding Principles

The Tableau Community consists of people from different countries, cultures, and beliefs, as well as varying levels of experience with using Tableau. Because of this, our community is a vibrant and amazing place where we all come together because we have chosen to use Tableau. We must be mindful to ensure all of our interactions are centered around supporting one another and acquiring news skills and insights by sharing knowledge about the Tableau products.

➡️ Respect

  • Help us show respect for all. Most answers are provided by other Communities users just like you. Please provide a respectful answer as you yourself would like to get in return.
  • Despite differences in opinions, keep in mind that each perspective still deserves the same level of courtesy and even well-meaning people can and do make mistakes. Always assume good faith.
  • Please refrain from making negative comments, not to mention name calling, insults or profanity. Avoid using all capital letters, bold fonts, or emphasized words, which may convey an angry negative tone.

➡️ Collaboration

  • The Tableau Community exists to let users reach out to other users for advice on resolving issues or getting ideas and inspiration for trying new projects. Keep the conversation topic-centered. This is not a community for general chatting. However, recognition of good work, encouragement and friendly comments are always welcome.

➡️ Being Helpful

  • Be descriptive and concise when you post questions and choose a title that contains key-words such as “geo-mapping” or “dual-axis display” as this makes it easier to find topics of interest.
  • Bring forward new, helpful information when you reply and reply with useful and positive comments. Don’t forget to thank a fellow community member who pointed you in the right direction and mark the answer “Helpful”.
