Only “Default” and “Filled” shapes visible in Tableau Public – missing other shape folders

Hi everyone,

I recently installed Tableau Public (version 2026.1) on my Windows system. The installation is on my D drive, while the “My Tableau Repository” folder is located in my Documents folder on the C drive.

Inside the repository, I can see the Shapes folder, but it is completely empty (no subfolders inside it).

When I try to use shapes in a worksheet:

  • I drag a dimension to the Shape mark
  • Go to Shape → More Shapes

I only see:

  • Default
  • Filled

I do not see other folders like Arrows or Weather that are mentioned in some tutorials.

What I’ve tried:

  • Restarted Tableau Public
  • Confirmed repository path is correct
  • Verified Shapes folder location

Question:

Is it normal for Tableau Public to only show “Default” and “Filled” shapes?

Or am I missing some default shape folders/files?

Also, do I need to manually add custom shapes to use more options?

Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi all,

I’m facing an issue with a Published Data Source (PDS) on Tableau Server where a column rename is not reflecting in an existing connected workbook.

Scenario Example

I downloaded the PDS to Tableau Desktop and renamed a column from “City” to “New City”

After renaming, I refreshed the extract and republished the updated PDS back to the server.

What I Observed

  • In Tableau Server, when I open the existing workbook that uses this PDS, it still shows the old field name (“City”).
  • I performed a full refresh on the PDS in Tableau Server → still shows the old name in the workbook.
  • I downloaded the connected workbook to Tableau Desktop and used:

Data → Tableau Data Server → Refresh From Source
  • Even in Tableau Desktop, after the refresh, the workbook still displays the old column name (“City”) instead of the renamed “New City”.

Additional Check

When I use the same updated PDS to create a new workbook directly on the server, the new field name “New City” appears correctly.

My Question

Why is the updated field name not propagating to the existing workbook, even after:

  • Renaming the column in the downloaded PDS
  • Republishing the PDS
  • Refreshing the PDS on Tableau Server
  • Refreshing the connected workbook via “Tableau Data Server → Refresh From Source”
  • Confirming that new workbooks do pick up the updated column name

Is there any additional step required to force a metadata refresh in the existing workbook?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    @Vinay Maddi

Hi, unfortunatelly that has been the behaviour since the beggining.

    a. When you create a published datasource, the renaming of the fields lives on the metadata of the datasource.  As you know, when you connect there is a kind of automatic renaming. Thus, for example fields like NAME_FIELD are converted to Name Field.

    b. When you connect to the published from a workbook, the renaming is transfered to the workbook's metadata.  Also, when you connect to a published datasource in Prep Builder, the renaming is transfered to the input module as changes.

    c.  When you change the name in the datasource, the name already stored in the workbook takes precedence/priority over the name stored in the datasource.  So a change in the datasource is not reflected in an already created workbook.

As a workaround, you may reconnect to the published datasource, and perform a datasource replacement, or if it is only a field, you may change the name of the field manually.

If this post resolves the question, would you be so kind to "Accept this Answer"?. This will help other users find the same answer/resolution and help community keep track of answered questions. Thank you.

Let's say I have 3 columns: date, cost, and revenue. Date is in the row field and Measure Names is in the column field. How would I conditionally format ONLY the cost field so that if a value is between 5 and 10 the font will be red and otherwise the font will be green? I would also like to create a similar logic for revenue, just using different thresholds.

Thank you!

    Use Calculated Fields

Step 1: Create a Calculated Field for Cost Color

Step 2: Create a Calculated Field for Revenue Color

Step 3: Combine into a Single Color Field

    Step 4: Apply the Color

if you require more detailed steps let me know

Hi,

I have a requirement where I have 3 filters in a dashboard, and I want the report to refresh only after all the filters are applied.

For example when the users select the first filter I dont want the report to bring results,.It has to wait for all the 3 filters and then bring the results. The problem is I have 2 data sources in the same dashboard .

What is the best approach to fix this issue

    Hi, @Radha Sub

I’m not sure if this is what you were looking for, but please take a look.

I used parameters and set actions to display the filter list in sequence and show the results when each item is clicked.

If this is what you wanted, I can provide additional explanation. Thank you.

New Tableau Community Forums Layout Changes are here!

Hello Community,

We are delighted to announce we have just launched a brand new design and layout for some of our key pages on the site. The changes were made based on the feedback our users have given us on how they use the site. We are incredibly grateful for our users for taking the time to share with us their experiences and feedback on using the forums and we used this in redesigning the site. Our main object was to make it a better experience for users to navigate the site and to get involved.

What is changing?

Here is a brief summary of the main changes:

Site Navigation

We have streamlined the Navigation Bar to focus on the most important pages our Community Users visit. We wanted to reduce the number of clicks needed to get to our most popular pages

image (9)New Site Navigation Bar

Homepage

We have changed the layout of the homepage to make it easier for users to get around the site and go to the most important popular on the site.

My Activity

This is a brand new page for logged in users to see their activity in the Forums. From this page a user can view the latest activity in the Topics they follow. They can also view their User Groups, Bookmarks and Ideas. Note you will need to be logged in to the forums to get the full experience of this page.

Explore Forums

This page has been changed to focus on allowing you to find the right topic to ask your question in and make it easier to ask a question in the right space. You may notice the "Ask a Question" button is not prominently displayed any more. The reason for this is that on this page we would like users to select a topic using the icons and ask a question directly within the topic. The reason for this is that we found when asking a question directly on this page, not all topics were available to choose meaning questions often got asked within topics not best suited to them. By choosing the topic in advance you know your question will go straight to the right topic to be seen by topic experts!

Ideas

The page layout has changed to display ideas more prominently and also give more information on the Idea statuses. We have also added in a dedicated section for you to browse all released ideas and have changed the colour palette of our Ideas Viz based on user feedback.

Topic Pages

These are our topic landing pages e.g. Maps & Geocoding. Added breadcrumbs to improve navigation and additional sections for Blogs and Product Ideas associated directly with the topic. Now you can view all Product Ideas and Blogs linked to a specific topic directly within the Topic Page!

Topic DetailNew features added to Topic Detail Pages

Leaderboard

The Leaderboard page now shows much more information than ever before such as tips on how to increase your points and gain badges. We have also increased the refresh frequency of the Leaderboard so it now updates every day.

Community Updates

This is a new page where users can get the latest updates on the Community Forums and Forums Newsletter

We would like to thank all our users who contributed to giving feedback on the site and also to those who volunteered to test out the new layouts before they went live. Our volunteers are a great mix of our Forum Ambassadors, Tableau Employees and Regular Forums users who all play their part in making our Forums a great place to collaborate and use Tableau together. As always we want to hear from you on site feedback so please contact us at community@tableau.com with any questions or feedback or reply underneath this post.

Ask Data, Tableau's natural language capability, is built to work with all your published data sources on Tableau Server or Online. But in order to take advantage of all the benefits of Ask Data, your data sources need to be curated to support an optimal analytical conversation.

I notice that over the weekend Joe Mako has broken through the 2,000 post barrier. I just wanted to say that his tireless contributions to this forum have helped countless people. Whether it's something simple or something utterly crazy, Joe's normally the first one to answer and always the one who'll continue answering any thread until the Original Poster is satisfied.

Well done Joe - your contribution is greatly appreciated.

    Andy, and All,

Thank you very much, and I believe I have already received my prize: the many great people I have meet here, and the friendships I have gained here are most valuable.

Every time someone replied to a post with Thanks, I gained joy, a sense that someone was helped, and I am glad every time that happens. I get excited when I see Richard, Andy, Alex and many others helping people find solutions as well. I really enjoy being a part of the community here.

Participating on the forums here is how I am learning Tableau (there is still much about Tableau I do not know), I take each question as a challenge to learn more about how to effectively use Tableau, the comments I post are mostly me learning Tableau, and I try to share what I am learning.

Using Tableau is a joy for me, and by posting on the forum, I feel like I am sharing that joy.

So for me, my thanks goes to everyone who has posted a question to the forum and the developers of Tableau because all have had an amazingly positive impact on my life.

    Thank you.
