"Give them System Admin for now." 🙃

Five of the most expensive words in Salesforce. Because "for now" never seems to end, and nobody ever raises a ticket asking to have their access removed.

This Sunday in Session 2, Trust, Earned Not Assumed, we'll roll up our sleeves in a live org:

🗝️ A "who has the keys?" audit: admins, integration users, sharing defaults, guest users

🛡️ How to scope an AI agent so it only touches what it should

💬 Why the strongest defence against prompt injection is surprisingly simple

You don't need to be a security expert. You just need to care about the people whose data lives in your org.

And trust me, you'll leave wanting to check your org first thing Monday morning. 😄

For years, my answer to is this a good architecture? was three confident words: scalable, secure, maintainable.

Nobody ever asked me what those words actually meant. Including me. This Sunday, that changes. We're kicking off a 7-week live series on the new Salesforce Well-Architected Framework, and Session 1 is all about the big picture:

  • ✨ What changed, and why 3 pillars became 5
  • ✨ Why this is NOT just the AI framework
  • ✨ A live 5-question health check you can run on your own org on Monday morning

You'll leave with a clear map of what good really looks like on Salesforce, and a language your whole team can share. Come for the pentagon. Stay for the aha moments. 📐

Two architects walk into a design review. 🏛️

  • Architect A: "Make it asynchronous."
  • Architect B: "No, synchronous is fine."

Twenty minutes later, they're still arguing. Neither is wrong. Neither has said what they actually care about. The meeting is now running over, and the winner is whoever is loudest or has the most grey hair.

That's exactly where our first live session started: "good architecture" used to be a vibe. Then Salesforce rebuilt its Well-Architected Framework. Three pillars became five: Trust, Reliability, Operational Excellence, Resource & Cost Optimization, and Fairness. Now everyone in the room gets the same questions and the same vocabulary, so the argument becomes a conscious trade-off instead of a shouting match.

A big thank you to everyone who joined, asked sharp questions, and kept the discussion going. You made the session a lot more fun than any design review I've seen. 🙌

Missed it? No stress. The recording is waiting for you here 👇

Update: Migrating the Trailblazer Community to Slack

As part of the broader transition to the reimagined Trailblazer Community in Slack, the online Trailblazer Community website will move to read-only status on

October 30, 2026.

What this means for this group:

This group will become read-only on October 30. Members will no longer be able to create new posts or reply to existing threads.

Some groups will not transition to the new Trailblazer Community in Slack. Existing content will remain available for reference as an archive.

The broader Trailblazer Community will continue in Slack. When the new Trailblazer Community in Slack launches in November, members will be able to join the broader community and participate in new conversations there.

Please review the FAQ for more details about the transition and what to expect next.

Thank you for being part of this group and for everything you’ve contributed to the Trailblazer Community. Let me know if you have any questions!

I'm investigating a platform level behaviour with the standard Location

object and wanted to share my findings to see if anyone else has encountered this.

The Issue

Users with the following object permissions:

  • Read = Enabled
  • Create = Enabled
  • Edit = Disabled

Cannot create Location records. Record creation fails with:

INSUFFICIENT_ACCESS_ON_CROSS_REFERENCE_ENTITY

As soon as we grant Edit

permission on the Location object, the same users can create records successfully.

Troubleshooting Performed

To isolate the problem, we:

  • Disabled all Record-Triggered Flows
  • Disabled all Apex Triggers (including managed package triggers where possible)
  • Attempted creation with only the required Name field populated
  • Removed all references to related records and lookup fields
  • Verified consistent reproduction across multiple test users

Even under these minimal conditions, Create permission alone is insufficient.

My Hypothesis

While reviewing the Location object documentation, I noticed the

RootLocationId field (Read-only Lookup to Location) is populated with the Id of the Location record itself (self-reference) when a Location has no parent (ParentLocationId is null).

Since a record's Id is not available until the record is saved to database (not committed), any platform process that maintains fields dependent on the newly generated Id must execute in the after context

(context in which the fields of the record itself are no longer editable).

My hypothesis is that Salesforce performs an internal update operation after the insert to populate RootLocationId with the newly created record's Id. If this internal update runs in the same transaction and in the current user context, it would require Edit permission on the Location object—even though the user is only attempting to create a new record.

Why I think this happens:

  1. RootLocationId is a read-only, system-maintained field
  2. The field references the Location's own Id (when no parent exists)
  3. Record Ids are only available in after-insert context
  4. The error INSUFFICIENT_ACCESS_ON_CROSS_REFERENCE_ENTITY typically indicates insufficient permissions on a cross-referenced record
  5. In this case, the "cross-reference" may be the Location record itself during the internal update

Has anyone experienced the same behavior with the standard Location object? Is there any documented platform behaviour related to RootLocationId or Location hierarchy management that could explain this?

The Salesforce support team has replied. They have informed me that this is a platform bug. Here is their explanation:

"This occurs because Salesforce automatically updates the read-only Root Location (RootLocationId) field as part of the standard save process. This internal update currently checks for Edit permission on the Location object. Therefore, Create permission alone is not sufficient, causing the entire record creation to be rolled back."

They have informed that the bug has been fixed and will be included in release 264.2 (Winter '27).
