#SEO Basics0 discussing

Over the past decade, I've been asked a lot by owners of SFCC webstores whether or not they need to invest in SEO, specifically around site speed & user-experience technical SEO. So, I've put together a benchmark study to help educate and direct resources to meaningful actions.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of setting meta tags up in their LWR site for content detail pages? I'm currently writing the meta, OG and Twitter tags for each of my content detail pages. I've reached the point where I need to write the tags for image and canonical URL where I'm struggling a bit with format.

Some resources will always have the same image, some will need a specific image chosen from the CMS by the author.

For the ones which are always the same, I've looked at Learn Experience Cloud website as a best practice example and see they are using the tag below for using a single image across multiple pages.

<meta property="og:image" content="https://www.learnexperiencecloud.com/sfsites/c/file-asset/sfexpcloudLogo" />

Is this the only way or can I acheive using a single image for a sepcific content type, or can I use an image from the CMS instead of files?

For resources which have an author selected thumbnail, I have built an image selection field into the template to allow the author to select an image. I've wondered whether this could be dynamically populated in the meta tag using {!Item.contentBody.<node name>.url or whether I would be better using a text field and asking the author to drop the content key from the desired image in instead.

I'd also like to set a canononical URL for each resource, our marketing team is currently parametrising URLs to track campaigns which causes some issues in Search console. Can I use the {!Item_detailURL} expression to acheive this or will I need to look at adding in another field to self-reference the content key for the resource?

I'd be really grateful if anyone could share any examples of how they acheived this or share any tips they have as it's something I can't test while our site isn't live it's causing some confusion!

    For the canonical URL I've tried out a variety of expressions similar to Item._detailURL into the page-level <head> but nothing is accepted.

    I know there is a recommendation to add a custom field that holds the url you want to use and reference that, so that may be what you have to do.

    So if you have a field in the content record called c_canonical_url, you'd add something like this to your page-level <head>

    <link rel="canonical" href="https://mysite.com/{!Content.Body.c_canonical_url}">

    The value of that field would have to be whatever comes after the / in your site's url. It's a very manual process, but I don't see any other way to do it because I don't think there is an expression (that works) to get the current url of the page. You also have to know ahead of time what the url for that page will be so you can put it in field!

    We have done this one of our our client's B2B sites, but it's done programmatically. We have a custom field on a product object, but the value of that field is auto-populated from the client's Product Management software.

    There may be better ways to do it, @George Abboud @Craig Johnson - you two may have a better idea for how to handle this?
