to create a website that works with SF for donations, event rsvps and ticket purchases, etc. (We are also considering adding Communities for a log-in area for member engagement). Any experiences on how easy it was to set up, how user friendly the interface is, whether it is easy to push information back and forth between the site and SF, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

We had to have help from a consultant to do this. Not user friendly in the slightest unless you are a VF expert. We had a need for complete customization that a 3rd party app couldn't meet so the solution worked for us.
I'd highly recommend purchasing a 3rd party forms or event management application if it's a regular need that the forms change over time.
