#Soft Credit0 discussing

Dusting off a feature we haven't used often or consistently and wanted to validate (or invalidate), some things.

First off, I have it set up for when an Org donation is created and we have a primary contact, the created Contact Role is automatically set to "Soft Credit". I then have a NPSP custom rollup to rollup soft credits to any contact role that is set to "Influencer" or "Soft Credit"

I know if I create a Partial Soft Credit and set the correct role as a Soft Credit and an amount, the custom rollup also rolls up the amount I set in the partial soft credit.

So with all that said, here is an example of something I just did and I am trying to validate I understand how the Custom Rollups work on Opps that have them.

I created an Opp for "Company X" and I added a primary Contact of "Jane Doe" and set the amount of the opportunity to $1,000. Once the opp was created, a Contact Role for "Jane Doe" was created and the Role was set as "Soft Credit (as it should be).

I then created a Partial Soft Credit record for "Jimmy John" and set the value to $500 and the Role as Soft Credit. This automatically created the Contact Role for Jimmy John as the role was set to "Soft Credit" (again as expected)

I manually ran the rollup batches to validate the data. I assumed that on the contact record Jane Doe would have a soft credit of $500 and Jimmy John would have a soft credit of $500.  To split the amount evenly.

BUT....what happened was that Jane Doe had a soft credit of $1,000 the full amount of the opp, and Jimmy John had a soft credit amount of $500 (per the soft credit record).  Is that expected behavior?

I created another soft credit for Jane Doe and set that for $500 and added a role of Soft Credit and then re-ran the rollup batches and I then did get $500 for each contact.

So I am just trying to validate that if I would want to split any donations into even amount to match the total, I need to create partial soft credits for each person, even when the Contact Role is auto created.

And a side question, is there any case where you would want one person to receive a soft contact for the full amount and then just create soft credits for some others to sy $200 and $200...my "mather" persona in me, says that it should equal, but maybe there are cases where it doesn't (?)

    Hi @Heath Parks

    It tracks.

It sounds like you had an expectation than once you gave one contact a Partial Soft Credit of $500, the other Soft Credit would automatically adjust? If so, then no, that's not how it works. There's nothing that forces the total soft credit to equal the Opportunity amount (it's not like GAU Allocations in that respect). You will need to use the Manage Soft Credit button - which is better than creating Partial Soft Credits directly - to manage the value for each contact. You can also do validation there that would force you to make sure the total doesn't exceed the Opportunity amount if you want (useful when allocating a company Matching Gift).

It's common for the total to not line up. Soft Credits are more of a stewardship function than a financial requirement like Allocations, Hard Credit, or Payments are. So with that in mind, it's perfectly fine to let's say give everyone in the Household soft credit for a gift at the full amount. Or say John was the Board Member who solicited the $10K gift and Mary in a different Household works at the organization and championed it. It would be silly and probably challenging to say John was worth $9K and Mary was worth $1K.

    Hope that helps!

A client of mine typically enters in DAF donations under the company administering the DAF as opposed to the donor's individual DAF (as in, they're entering in opportunities under Fidelity Charitable rather than the Kwok Family Fund). Separately, they're associating the donor to the company (Fidelity Charitable) using Affiliations.

I thought this was fine, but the question of automated soft credits via affiliations came up. If a bunch of donors are being associated to Fidelity Charitable, and the Related Opportunity Contact Role is being filled out for all of those affiliation records - I think that would mean a bunch of people would end up getting soft credited for the donation?

If that's the case, is the best practice instead to either:

1) Create an account record for the fund, associate opportunities with that fund, associate the donors with the fund via affiliations and fill in the Related Opportunity Contact Role, or,

2) Continue associating the donation with the company, but fill in the soft credit in some other way, either manually or by filling in the Primary Contact field on the opportunity?

Somewhat related: does

Salesforce.org themselves have a recommended way DAF opportunities should be entered in - against the bank, or against the fund? Both methods are referenced in the NPSP documentation. (I also know it's probably hard to have a recommendation on this because every nonprofit wants to see this differently, so there's naturally many ways people have chosen to deal with it)

Has anyone been able to come up with a report type that combines hard and soft credits?

I need a report that has all opportunities by contact role/affiliation, including soft credits. I've gotten to a report type that appears to have all of the required fields, but when I run the reports there is nothing in those columns, so it's not pulling the data for some reason. I can get to the data separately (for example just a soft credit report) so it's not that I don't have access to the data I need to see.

Hi. I have a donor who has made a multi year individual pledge to give $10k per year for 3 years (total = $30k). Their first two payments are made via a personal check reducing their pledge balance to $10k. For the final $10k payment, they send a grant through their family foundation. I need to record the hard payment as coming from the family foundation so I create a paid opportunity linked to the foundation. I also create a soft credit to the original donor. For the donor, they have now completed their 3 year pledge. But, in NPSP there is still an unpaid balance of $10k on the original Opportunity. Is there any way to link the soft credit to unpaid pledge balance? If not, how do others manage this issue? Thanks!

Hi Jenny. To clarify, on the contact record, you would see the DAF donation in the contact related Opportunities. On the account record for the DAF, you would see the donation in the account related Third Party Donor record.

Hello!

How do you configure NPSP so you can see a soft credited opportunity on a contact's parent household account quick links?

The use case is I donate through Fidelity Charitable DAF. An opportunity is created for my gift, and I, a contact, get a soft credit.

On my contact's quick links, I can see the listing for this opportunity. Great.

When I go to the household account for my contact, I do not see a listing of the opportunity under the account's quick links.

Thanks in advance for any and all help on this. I've gone through trailheads soft credits and can't quite finagle the knowledge in them to match our needs in this instance.

In quick links, no, alas.  That's one of those "black box" components that can't be hacked, at least not declaratively.

What you COULD do is create a screen flow that presented these in a data table that looks a lot like a list view, maybe put them on a separate tab.  But it wouldn't be in the context of the quick links, tho!

I'm setting up soft credits and entering related opportunity contact roles on the RELATIONSHIP object. But when I do this a solicitor related contact role shows up on the reciprocal relationship, where I don't want it . Any help on this greatly appreciated.

Hi all, I was curious if any of you knew where in Trailhead I can find the answer to the OP's question. I am running into the same issue with having (using the above example) both Susan and Bob being listed as the solicitor of one another. The powerofus links no longer work. Thanks in advance for any/all help.

We would like to be able to rollup soft credit given to contacts to the household so that we can understand a household's combined impact across all of the household members through hard and soft credit. Unfortunately, if you create this by just rolling up soft credit total from contact to account, you run the chance of double-counting gifts if multiple household members have received soft credit or hard credit for the same gifts. Does anyone have a workaround to get total unique soft credit influence on the household level?

Hello, I am struggling with this one now as well, and best solution I had come up is the same as @Maida Rider's. However there's a case of household accounts that were split up from others (such as in a divorce, but grown children would also fit the bill) and end up with gifts under their accounts that are only "Household Member" soft-credited (as there are now no members in the same household that also got hard credit for the same gifts.)  Excluding Household Member credit than leaves them with $0 total influence.  Any further creative solutions to accommodate this case scenario?

I have built a contact soft credit rollup to the household account. When I delete a contact soft credit from an opportunity and manually run the batch, the target field on the household account is updated to 0, which is great.

But how does the batch know that the household account needs to be updated, since it's not a triggered process? Does the batch recalculate any account where the target field has a value, in case the soft credit was deleted?

There is no TDTM handler on Opportunity Contact Role, so how does NPSP know that a soft credit role was added?

I am doing preliminary research to move from our current CRM to NPSP. We have several donors who give through both personal accounts but also through businesses that they own. We have a sponsorship program that we track using memberships; those memberships can expire because a payment came through and was posted on the donor's organization account.

Is there a way in NPSP that I can assign a soft-credit from an organization account's donation to fulfill a membership on a household account?

Hi, I know this post is more than 2 years old, but wondering, how do you assign a partial soft credit in an organization account as a "payment" for a membership opportunity in a household account? I'm not sure how a membership soft credit rollup is involved.  Thanks!

We have used Customizable Rollups for for a long time and recently our Soft Credit Rolls ups are no longer rolling up. I have checked the roll ups settings and the filter groups and everything looks set up correctly. We did notice that the "Contact (Soft Credit)" only has one Amount field called "Soft Credit: Amount" and I am not sure where that field is located. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
