HED Corporate & Foundation Relations

This group is intended to cover community conversation on Higher Education partnerships with corporate and foundation entities. From grant opportunities to connecting students with employers to commercializing innovation - let's get chatting!

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Technology in Business Schools Roundtable (TBSr) Salesforce conference will be at the University of Minnesota, this July 20 and 21, 2023.

July is a great time to visit Minneapolis. We promise there won't be snow.  It SHOULD be summery and warm!

Much like the 2022 event, we're designing a program packed with lightning talks, good ideas, and time to connect with each other about all things Salesforce.

Extra bonus, Beyoncé will be performing on campus on July 20th.  I can't promise tickets to the concert, but I can promise you it will be a great time.

We're making the shift from the administrative account model to a hybrid account model to better suite our corporate relations needs.

We've noticed when we link a contact to a business/organization account via the standard account name field, the Primary Contact on the account gets set to that contact.  Ideally we'd leave the Primary Contact to be populated by a user.

I am guessing this has to deal with the ACCT_IndividualAccounts_TDTM trigger.  Can anyone confirm this?  Also, any ideas for how to set the filter field/filter value to only run for the administrative accounts?

I don't know for sure, but I think you're probably correct @Nick Lindberg that the EDA trigger is populating the primary contact field on Accounts for all record types. As loathe as I am to go against standard functionality, I'd argue that when you enter hybrid account territory, you consider turning off the standard EDA trigger that is driving this.

If I remember correctly, the Primary Contact field on the Account is a carryover from NPSP that was added when Household Accounts were brought into EDA. If you aren't using Household Accounts, that field doesn't have much functional use, apart from from automating Account ownership around the Primary Contact ownership. Again, this isn't something you'd typically want with traditional Business Organization accounts.

In short, if you're not using the Primary Contact field for any functional purpose (compared to, say, how fundraisers use Household Accounts), deactivating the ACCT_IndividualAccounts_TDTM trigger may have no real impact on your used functionality. As long as you're ok with how account ownership is assigned in the absence of this trigger, you're probably good to go.

As always, test carefully in a sandbox, and consider the long-term impacts of bypassing standard functionality for a current need. But it seems to me that if you have no real use for the Primary Contact field on the Account, disabling that functionality will give you a simpler path to implementing your hybrid account model.

Noticing an oddity during our testing in a hybrid model.  We use the household accounts in place of administrative accounts.  We're able to successfully move a contact with a household account to an account of a Business/Org record type.  And also able to update the account from one business/org record type to another.

However, in a scenarios in which the account on a contact was set to a Business/Org account, and clear the account name in hopes of creating a new household account, we get the following error message on the standard account field:

  • A blank required field is preventing this record from being saved. The required field could be on this record, or on a record related by a lookup value.Name

We have turned off custom automation on the contact to ensure we don't have things getting in the way and still encounter this error.

Also, this is likely related to a post of mine from last week in regards to the ACCT_IndividualAccounts_TDTM trigger.

Is this a scenario that others have accounted for previously? @Sector: Higher Education @HED Corporate & Foundation Relations

Random chance idea of what might be the cause, we are using Households and not administrative accounts.  I turned off the automatic renaming of Household accounts and able to clear the Account and create the new household account without issue.

I toggled it on/off and that seemed to change the behavior - on it errored, off I could clear the account and a new household was created.

Many of the higher ed orgs I've seen that are doing corporate relations use D&B Optimizer to enrich account data. Wondering what folks are using to enrich contact data? Sales Navigator looks promising. Wondering if there are additional apps people are using to validate/update email addresses?

@Nick Lindberg - LinkedIn Navigator has a widget that is exposed in Salesforce and requires the standard Contact-Account model to facilitate matching. Also, they don't scrape data from LinkedIn and save it in Salesforce but you can do a 'stare and compare' approach when viewing the contact information on your org with what is on the LinkedIn record. @Carrie Marcinkevage is using this feature in more depth than we are and may be able to provide some additional context.

Nice article about Corporate Relations from Traction on Demand: https://tractionondemand.com/blog/engagement-of-corporations-in-education/. It features the new Corporate Relations Trailblazer Guide. Here is my favorite thought from the article: "The biggest challenge will be gaining commitment from internal stakeholders to building efficient, shared processes that drive mutual benefit. Painting a vision and generating quick wins that engage stakeholders are as important, if not more, than resolving the technical challenges of managing B2B and B2C processes concurrently in Salesforce."

I want to call out a few more people who deserve credit for this Corporate Relations Trailblazer Guide: @Laura Landphair whose groundbreaking work at Cornell got the ball rolling and @Kathleen Lueckeman who helped a ton with the Guide itself, making sure (as always) that we included specific details about the intent of core objects. And a thanks to the power of community -- the discovery effort started with a trip last January (those were the days(. @Vicky Mikula, @Kathleen Lueckeman, and I visited Olivet, Dean Ernzen at Notre Dame @Chris Tompkins at Indiana and to learn as much as we could about their Salesforce implementations. @Alan Ng played a big part as well. Thanks to all!

Greetings Corporate Relations trailblazers! I'd like to invite your input to the soon-to-be-published Corporate Relations Recipe Book. I am attaching a copy here, along with a video link to a discussion about pages 11-19 which talks about how core and custom objects might be used in a corporate relations implementation. We're trying to get as much input from as many perspectives as possible. And, if you're thinking about CR, the recording is actually very educational! Thanks in advance for contributing to this community effort!

Here is the recording - a discussion in the Higher Ed Advisory Council about core and custom objects: https://bit.ly/34W05fR. I'll post the Recipe Book in a comment.

Corporate relations folks - we want to hear from YOU! We'd love to understand a little bit more about how universities think about corporate relations in general, and where applicable, how Salesforce is currently supporting some of these efforts. We'd love your input in this quick survey. Thank you so much!
