I’m building a welcome journey in SFMC for first-time customers, with emails on Days 0, 3 and 7. The entry Data Extension is overwritten daily, but customers already in the journey continue using their Journey Data.
I want customers who unsubscribe during a wait to exit the journey before the next email. My source DE has a Marketing Consent field, but it isn’t automatically updated when someone unsubscribes.
What is the recommended way to configure this? Can Exit Criteria read the current All Subscribers or publication-list status directly, or do I need a separate status DE linked in Contact Builder? If a separate DE is needed, how should its status be kept updated?
Also, my fictional test customer exists in the entry DE but not in All Subscribers. How can I test this exit rule correctly?

I recommend using a Contact Data DE for the current subscription/consent status rather than relying directly on the Entry DE or All Subscribers.
Create a DE such as Consent_DE with ContactKey and SubscriptionStatus, link it to Contact Builder, and keep the status synchronized whenever the subscriber unsubscribes.
Then configure Journey Builder → Exit Criteria as:
SubscriptionStatus = Unsubscribed
One important point: Exit Criteria is evaluated when the contact reaches the end of a Wait activity; it is not continuously evaluated during the wait. Therefore, the consent status must be updated before that evaluation.
For testing, make sure the test ContactKey exists in All Subscribers and that the same ContactKey is used consistently across the Entry DE, Contact Data, and subscriber record. Then unsubscribe the test contact and verify that the status in the Contact Data DE changes before the Wait completes.
Also, use Publication List/subscriber status as an additional safeguard for email sends, but don't depend on it alone for removing the contact from the journey.
Hope This Helps!!
