Design for User Success: Field Placement
A new series starts today that goes along with my recent presentations at user groups and events. Freebie’s donning his bohemian look and sitting down at the drafting table to discuss design, art, composition, graphics, and more. Step One is to think about where you place fields on your pages. Don’t just fill a page layout based on the order the fields came together. Consider where your users are looking, how they go about their day, and what they need to do at any given time. Your colleagues will thank you!

I loved the article. It's a common pain and it goes right to the point.
@Michael Kolodner, one step I would add is to perform data profiling of the key objects across different life cycle stages. This way, what fields are being populated when.
For transactional objects (opportunities, Cases, etc.), I look at data profiling statistics to identify what's populated (without 100% default values) across stages.
For Accounts, Contacts, and Leads, I look at when a record is first created (no update date) and also leverage roll-up fields to correlate their content to associated transactions to identify what's created when an Opportunity is newly created vs. in late-stage, or when a Case is created. This helps me think about contextual data capture.
Just a few thoughts to further augment this great guide. Keep them coming.
