Why is Apex CPU time limit exceeded and what is the workaround?

I am trying to update 2 fields only on fewer than 400 contact records. I have done larger updates than this with no issue, but now, today, I am not able to commit these updates and every single record is rejected because of the CPU time limit. Is there a way to change the batch size (if that will help) or is there something else I could be doing (outside of the developer console) that will allow me to finish the updates?

    @Ashlynn Sylvain​ we have been investigating an uptick of CPU Timeout errors over the past few weeks. @Jess Lopez​ has noticed that automated processes like Process Builder have been taking up a bit more of your daily limit resources than normal, which may be the culprit. If you can, try disabling those that are touching the object you are updating, and see if that helps.
