How can I view a record field on the related lists columns on a page layout of a contact when the master look up field points to a contact?

I created a connector object where there are two

lookup fields - one that is a required relationship field called “primary contact” and another that is a master look up relationship field called “family member friend”. Basically we have a situation where we have clients and we want to have a related list on their profile page layout of the family/friends contacts that have a relationship with them.  In the page layout for the related list, I would like to show that family member or friend listed along with their phone number, address, etc. from this type of contact record. However, when I go to edit the client page layout out and edit the related list to show these family member friends, the fields available to add to the columns are only those fields that are part of the connector object itself. I can’t view the fields from the contact record that I related. (See below for what I mean)

I don’t understand how I can make this available. When I did something similar with another connector object with cases and contacts having master lookup relationships, Salesforce did allow me to pull and show these fields from the contact object with a master relationship on the related list columns in the case page layout. (See below for what I mean)

Any idea why this is the case and how I can fix this? Is this option only available to connector objects where there are master relationships to cases and contacts but not one where it involves two contacts? Or is this possible only in case page layout view?  I had thought about creating formula fields on connector objects to pull the data from the specific fields on the contact record but I want to avoid that if I can just find out how to display the contact fields information in the columns on the related list contact page layout view.
