Validation Errors While Saving Record(s)
There were custom validation error(s) encountered while saving the affected record(s). The first validation error encountered was "You do not have sufficient access to modify splits of this split type.".

This appears to happen when the user making the change doesn't have visibility to the Opportunity Split field. If you go to Setup | Customize | Opportunities | Opportunity Splits | Settings, you'll see your org's split types. One of the columns for these split types is "Split Field." These show you the object and the field name of the split type field (e.g., "Opportunity - Amount" would be the Amount field on the Opportunity object).
Once you know what fields are your split type fields, you can navigate to those fields in setup (for the Amount example: Setup | Customize | Opportunities | Fields). Click on the field name, then click the "Set Field-Level Security" button. Check the "Visible" checkbox next to the user's profile, then Save.
