I don't know if anyone has posted this before, but I wanted to share an app that works with chrome that is amazing for assisting with grammar.  If my grammar is bad in this post it's because I'm using firefox ;)

Any thoughts for when working on a custom object?

Here's another query for people. I've been getting more and more companies offering a "guest post" or to provide me with a product to review.

I personally, don't like the idea of having someone guest post to sell a product. I'm not that hard up for content.

What do you think of doing paid (honest) reviews or posts? Of course, transparency would be a must and I would make sure people know at the very start if it someone paid to post or I was paid (monetarily or otherwise) for a review.

What are your thoughts?

I've managed to grow my site with the contribution of guest posters, so I massively value them. However I'm very strict on the type of posts that are allowed on, I have guidelines that posters much follow and they are quite frequently rejected. The main logic behind the guest posts is that their sole focus must be to educate, not promote. Of course the reason most people are guest posting is for SEO/Promotional reasons, which is completely fine. I've had some posters write excellent educational articles, but on the flip side has booked them out for demos for weeks after people see their expertise on a certain area.

In terms of paid posts, I don't accept these. Money generated on my site comes from advertisement which is extremely clear. I think if the water is muddied between what content is sponsored or not, you can lose the trust of readers. However saying that, if its clearly marked what is sponsored, then this is another matter.

I got a couple of things I would love people's input on.

First, I'm looking at changing the look and feel of my site. When I first started it I chose white text on black background because I felt it was easier to read (I blame all my e-reading back then) and because I just hate all the white space. Now it just kind of "blah."  What do people do and why? Everywhere else seems to do Black text on White or Dark Gray on some sort of color.

Second, I just figured out where my email subscribers live (Only took me 3 years). I'm considering actually doing something with these besides emailing them posts. Is anyone else doing this? What are you using and why? My knee jerk is to go with MailChimp because... well that seems to be where everyone else is going. But I don't want to jump off the bridge if there's better alternatives.

Thoughts?

Hi @Brian Kwong, I echo everything that Atul has mentioned. Mailchimp is king when you have a relatively small email list. In terms of updating your site, I would strongly recommend paying $40 or so for a premium wordpress template. They are miles better than the free ones and give your site a much more professional look.

I have a question about domains. I currently host my site on a subdomain (www.salesforce.krusecollins.com). I bought a new domain (www.kruseinsalesforce.com) about 3 weeks ago. I have to wait 60 days to change domain names. And after researching what it'd take to change the domain and then lose my www.krusecollins.com domain, I think it'd just be easier to have my new domain (www.kruseinsalesforce.com) redirect to the subdomain (www.salesforce.krusecollins.com). So here's my question. Do I need to host my new domain in order to have it redirect to the domain I'm currently hosting (www.salesforce.krusecollins.com)? I've spent some time online trying to find this out but haven't found out a straight use case that would apply to my situation, so I figured I'd ask everyone here since your feedback is super helpful!

Thanks Brent, thanks for the clear answer on this, that makes sense. That should be easy enough to set up!

I want to share an experience I had with placing a facebook ad. Now technically, this was for my podcast (WizardCast). I use the same site for my blog as for my podcast show notes, so for me it's kind of the same.

I spent $30 on a facebook ad to display from 9/8 (7pm CST) and 9/10 (ended in the AM).  It was intended to get traffic (clicks to website) and I focused on anyone with interest of podcasts & salesforce.com who were 18+. I also excluded anyone who liked my salesforce wizard facebook page.

I chose this timeframe because Friday night & the weekend tends to be the slowest hits to my page. I figured the majority of the traffic to the page would be reliably considered from the ad.

According to Facebook, I reached 4,548 (meaning it showed up to that many people) and received 86 clicks to the show notes.

According to google analytics, I had 51 hits through the UTM campaign (used in the facebook ad). Average bounce rate was 45%, 1.8 pages per session, and the avg session duration was 40 seconds.

According to the blog (jetpack) stats, I had 48 hits to the page. So I'm not sure why the discrepancy between facebook and blog stats/analytics.

Based on my libsyn results, I went from 115 to 130 downloads. This tells me I drove traffic to the page, but didn't actually receive any new listeners.

My conclusion from this experiment with a N=1 is facebook ads can push traffic to your site, but finding the right audience can be tricky (at least for me). For my podcast at this point it doesn't related to additional listeners. Unfortunately, what I'm not able to do is to determine:

1. That any of the people who clicked on the Ad were already familiar with my blog site

2. That any of the people who clicked on my Ad came back again

I'm not ready to say facebook wasn't worth the time or money based on a single experiment post. I may do few more for different days/time of the week to see if it changes things.

Anyone else do Ads to drum up traffic to your website? Be interested in your experience.

I asked Facebook Support about the discrepancy between Google Analytics and Facebook. I can buy the HTTPS to HTTP - in part - but it doesn't cover everything. This was their reply:

    Cross-device reporting:

    - Third-party reporting platforms aren't able to measure cross-device conversions well due to cookie-based measurement. Because people are their real selves on Facebook, conversions can be captured more accurately in Facebook reports.

    - Cross-device conversions from ads are common. Mobile conversions tend to be underreported by third-party platforms that measure with cookies.

    - Facebook conversion tracking has the ability to track how your customers move between devices before they convert. Try compiling a cross-device report to see how mobile your audience is.

Check that your conversion attribution windows match. By default, the Facebook conversion reports are set to a 1-day after view or 28-day click window.

    UTM Parameters (Referrer Links):

    - Many third-party tracking providers use referrer URLs to credit conversions back to ads. Some providers may under-report Facebook conversions by as much as 40%. This is often due to the fact that roughly 40% of people browse Facebook using HTTPS instead of HTTP and when someone clicks on an ad on Facebook and converts on a site, the referrer cannot be recorded since they left an HTTPS environment and entered an HTTP environment.

    - In addition, if someone opens a new browser tab and purchases there (ex: they click the ad, run to a meeting, then go back to the website after work to purchase the product), the referrer URLs will no longer be available. The analytics tool will consider the purchaser a different person and not attribute the sale to Facebook.

Here is more information on common reporting discrepancies between third-party reporting tools and Facebook Ads Reporting:

I haven't been blogging as much lately. Between the demands of work, and new babies at home, I haven't found the time or energy to blog. In fact, if I'm frank, I haven't had the motivation either! What are you all doing to stay motivated? Also, is anyone interested in guest posting? I'm trying to get LEX content up on the site and would love some contributions.

I'm in the same situation Brent. I was ambitious starting out, but I think just focus on a number that you can do consistently. Whether that's once a week or twice a month. For me, when I do that, the opportunities arise for publishing another post. Good luck!

I'd say check out Salesforce Ben, I swear he's had some articles on starting SFDC blogs, and I've read them and I thought they included advice on how to write great social posts. That'd be my suggestion Becky!

I need brainstorming ideas.

Some of you may noticed that I stopped posting weekly at the Wizard news as far as blog posts go. When I was working as an admin I was able to share a lot of the cool stuff I was working on, or tricks I found trying to solve my problems.

Now that I'm a consultant, I have to be careful with what I share. Partly because it involves customer solutions and also in part because there are some company tips I don't feel comfortable sharing with.

This gets further compounded by the fact that I'm currently the sole content creator for our company blog. I don't want to be doing repeat posts. My plan was to use WizardNews for more detailed "How To" posts and keep the company blog higher up in the "cool ideas" or tips range without detailing how to do something.

All this leaves me with the quandary of writer's block. I have no idea what to write about for Wizardnews. I got about 36 topics for the company blog (whether I'm the right person to write them is a different question). But for Wizardnews I currently got bumpkiss.

I know there's other people in similar  boats (looking at you @Brent Downey ) how are you coming up with your ideas? got suggestions to get the brain grease working again?

I haven't read through the comments, but first thing that comes to my mind is to write on Salesforce current events, and break it down as easy reads. For example, I've written on how Salesforce is helping with Hurricane Harvey and then expanded on that news with resources and links to SFDC members who are coordinating their own relief efforts - and how to donate to them (http://salesforce.krusecollins.com/how-salesforce-is-helping-victims-of-hurricane-harvey/). Another post was on the new path to becoming a platform developer II. That's old news now. But look out on the news for things, for example, the new SFDC chatter desktop app for windows - that'd be cool to do a write up on!

I need some help to understand Subdirectories vs Subdomains.

What are the pros and cons of setting up a subdomain in Google analytics as a separate profile versus a report in the main domain profile?

My blog is a sub-domain, and I have 2 google analytics accounts for my root domain and for my sub-domain. I find it really useful and haven't had any cons at all. The only con I do have though I use my sub-domain for my Salesforce blog and my room domain for my personal blog. When I try to set ad-sense up for the sub-domain, google looks at the content on the root domain, not the sub. So I can't qualify for ad-sense on my Salesforce sub-domain because my root domain doesn't have any content that advertisers would want to advertise on - thus restricting me from being able to advertise on my sub domain.

But with GA, it's been solid and I haven't had a problem yet! I hope that answered you're question Rakesh.
