I tried several times to connect Tableau Desktop to MySQL but it just wouldn't connect. Here's everything that I have tried:
- Installed and Opened Tableau First Time, navigated to MySQL on the left panel, it prompted to download drivers.
- I downloaded the ARM drivers first only to realize that they are not supported with M1 so downloaded the usual driver for intel chips (x86), upon recommendation of several threads on the Tableau Forum, I installed the older versions such as 8.4 and 8.0.36 as per the following thread's recommendation. It would still not connect.
- With the aforementioned drivers, here are the steps I followed
- I installed the ODBC driver first that I found here. Then, I installed the MySQL driver that I found here. I ensured that I am downloading the (x86) and not the ARM version.
- Then, I closed Tableau and MySQL then I installed the ODBC driver first and then the MySQL driver. Once everything installed, I opened MySQL to setup a new user with the least privilege by connecting to the localhost using root and then creating a new account and password and assigning just the SELECT privilege to that account.
- Thereafter, I opened Tableau, navigated to MySQL on the left-hand panel, entered all the information such as Server, Database, Username, and Password and then clicked Sign In.
- As soon as I click on Sign In, it will show an error of which I have attached a screenshot below
- If anyone can please guide me resolving this error, I'd really appreciate it.
Environment: MacBook Air M1, macOS Sonoma
MySQL Version: 8.0.38
Tableau Version: 2024.2.2

So, basically if you can't install the arm drivers, then:
a. As a workaround, you would need to install Tableau Desktop using the x64 installer (instead of the arm optimized release), install the mysql x64 drivers and use Rosseta emulation.
b. The problem is on the drivers side, so you would need to look for a solution on how to install the arm drivers in your computer so you can use the Tableau Desktop Silicon-arm release.
Finally, the release of Tableau (x86 or ARM) must match the drivers release (x86 or ARM).
