Maybe I'm confused about CH 2.0 alerts. For CH 2.0, custom alerts aren't an option, but deployment alerts exist (CH Connector isn't compatible with CH 2.0). How might a team send notifications about specific events in an app?

You're not confused — this is a real gap. Per MuleSoft's docs, CH 2.0 custom alerts only cover deployment success/failure and app health, not arbitrary custom events from inside your flow (unlike classic CloudHub's CloudHub Connector). There's an open Idea Exchange request for exactly this.
Workarounds for CH 2.0 today:
1. Call an email/Slack/webhook connector directly from your flow when the event occurs — most common approach.
2. Emit a custom metric via Anypoint Monitoring and alert on a threshold.
3. Log the event with a distinct marker, forward to Splunk/ELK, alert externally.
