I am wondering best practices when to use roles, in which cases is it recommendable to use roles?. Only when you want to share records? (Sharing Rules).

Personally I assign a Role to every User in my org.
Having Users with no assigned Role can leady to some wonky Report Results
Also there a lot of things within Salesforce that can be assined to Users, like a Sharing Rule or access to a Report or Dashboard Folder, or Routing an Email Alert, etc, that are much easier when all of your Users are assigned a Role
