We are in the process of setting up Marketing Cloud and the ability to send emails for campaigns. We have elected to self-host the DNS and Zone records for the Domains.

Are there any considerations we should keep in mind by doing this? What are the Pros and Cons with this approach?

Main Pro: control, Main Con: Responsibility.

If you have someone comfortable working with DNS files and who understands how they work, the set up, as I understand it, is fairly trivial, however depending on your host/provider etc. It can also be challenging to get the specific access and updates you need. If you do go the self hosting route, due to the slew of unknowns support will basically not help in any way with set up or issues that may come up. Any changes to host/provider can also require reconfiguration.

of note from the above docs "Marketing Cloud could also add a name server or change sending IP addresses, requiring updates to your DNS records. This modification requires direct access to the IT or domain host configuration instructions."

Changes are not common but would need to be dealt with in a timely fashion were they to arise.
