I am not sure what best practice would be for this issue. My company has a partner company. We pass leads back and forth. I need a way for one of my reps to indicate when one of their reps has passed them a lead. We want to indicate this by posting the external rep's name on the opportunity and to the account so we can report on both objects.
External reps aren't included as users in my instance. Ideally, i would make it so that once the internal rep put the external rep's name on the opportunity it would also be added to the account. My question is what's the best way to capture this information?
Approach #1: Make 2 drop downs on the opportunity and account and write a workflow that updates the account field when opportunities are closed/won.
Approach #2: Create lookup fields for contacts, create contacts for the external reps, and write a workflow to assign the contact to the matching account when the opportunities are closed won.
Accidental admin here so I am completely open to a better way of doing this. The goal is to be able to report on each external rep at the account and opportunity level. Ideally, internal reps would only have to add the external rep to the opportunities so they don't have to take extra steps to add it to the accounts.
Am I on the right track?

I think both of those options make sense. The benefit of approach 2 is that it is more open for anyone to make a contact then connect them, but that also means there are a lot more choices for the user.
Also something to consider is what if an account has multiple opportunities could they come from different external reps?
