Editing a Standard Field in a Custom Object

Question

I have created a custom object and am trying to change the name field from a text field to a lookup field. As this is a standard object, is there a way to change its object type or hide it?

You can't change the name field. Why do you want to change it to a lookup? A lookup defines a relationship.   You can, however (depending on your edition), with the name field to text, create a workflow rule and field update which sets the name to a value based on the relationship defined in a lookup field.

For this custom object, the name field will always be one of a handful of values, so I was hoping to change the object type to a picklist or search window that would populate the name options, rather than requiring manual entry each time.
