Possible to include line breaks or bullet points in quote line items?

Question

Our products often have line breaks in the description that provide details on everything that is included in the SKU. When we create quotes (using the standard quote object) it seems like any line breaks are ignored and the text runs together in a way that makes it harder for our customers to read/understand. We tried creating a custom rich text field that we pull into the quote template, but this doesn't seem to work either. CPQ is unfortunately prohibitively expensive. I thought Visualforce might be an option but I'm not very experienced with that. Anyone have suggestions?
