chatter and custom objects being updated by admin not showing in feed

We have custom objects and I have enabled feed tracking on certain fields.  When the field is updated manually it does generate a feed in Chatter.  But when the field is updated via the Dataloader, or via our 3rd party piece, it does not seem to generate a feed in Chatter.  Anyone know why and if there is any way to get the auto-updated field which is being tracked to generate a Chatter?

    Interestingly if it worked that way, folks would be yelling that they wanted it to stop! :-)

     

    What's the use case of having an automated process update the Chatter feed? I'd think this would cause a lot of "spam" in folks feeds. Am I wrong?
