I am importing historic data for a nonprofit using NPSP. I have used NPSP Data Import templates to create primary affiliations. The system automatically created affiliation start date as date of import. I have rectified it for now. My question is for future uploads, how do you deal with start date and other fields automatically created? Do you add the column to the template yourself? Any other field I should be aware of?

Yes, this is expected behavior with the NPSP Data Import process. If a value isn't provided for certain fields, NPSP may populate default values during record creation—for example, the Affiliation Start Date can default to the import date.
For historical data migrations, it's generally a good practice to extend the standard import template by adding any fields you want to preserve, such as Affiliation Start Date and other relevant historical fields. As long as the field is supported and mapped correctly during the import, NPSP will use the value you provide instead of the default.
Before performing a large migration, I also recommend testing with a small batch of records to identify any fields that receive default values or automation-driven updates. This helps ensure your historical data is imported accurately.
Hope this helps, and good luck with your migration!
