I was wondering if its possible to dynamically switch to another data source just by using a single-select filter in a worksheet?
Basically, we are trying to show a crosstab that shows info about some entities which have dynamic fields. Here's an example:
Lets say we have information about 12 organisations in 12 different tables. These tables have some common fields across organisations and some custom fields (that are unique to an organisation). The custom fields keep changing (users keep adding/deleting) on almost daily basis. Now we want to show these tables in a cross tab and switch across organisations using a filter (single select)
One approach we tried earlier is to make one big table instead and put all the columns in there (belonging to all the organisations). Non-relevant fields for an organisation showed NULLs. We thought we could just hide the columns which are all NULLs on Tableau Desktop. After searching enough on the Tableau forums and trying out multiple things, it seems its not really feasible to hide columns if they are all NULL (there is a workaround of using multiple sheets and swapping them but that does not apply here since we do not know the names and number of dynamic fields in advance).
So now, we are trying to see if we can use different data source for each organisation and use a filter in the worksheet to switch between the organisations/data sources. However, we would want to do it from a single sheet (since the charts and functionality is just the same across organisations, we just need to show their corresponding values and fields from their corresponding data sources). I mean we wouldn't want to create 12 sheets for 12 organisations and switch across them in the dashboard (which would solve the problem but would be very hard to maintain and less-intuitive a solution).
