I work in a manufacturing business where we use 2D contour plots to evaluate the surface uniformity of the parts we manufacture.  This is trivial in JMP and relatively straightforward (though less simple) in Excel (though its contour plots have a cheesy shading effect).  Examples of both attached.

 

It doesn't seem like Tableau will do contour plots, however.  Am I missing something?  Can Tableau do this?  If not, is anyone aware whether it's on the roadmap?

    I see that you provide just a tiny set (8X8) taken from the bigger one I suppose. I did a fast mock-up using a heatmap, please see the packaged workbook attached.

     

    You could try this approach and feed Tableau with your thousands of x and y measures, could be an elegant workaround.
