Hide (break line)

This appears to be an old problem.  I am bringing it up to see if there is a solution in 8.0.

 

I have a  line chart displaying clicks from an AdWords campaign by month.  When the campaign is paused for a period of time, the chart fills in the gap with a continuous line (see attached), rather than showing a break in the line.  I have tried using Hide (break line) per the instructions in the user guide however nothing happens when I switch between the various Special values - Marks options.

 

1.  Is Hide (break line) the correct way to go about this?  Any thoughts as to what I may be doing incorrectly?

 

2.  If not, what is the best (easiest) way to suppress the line for periods when campaigns are paused?
