Is there an out of the box way I can take fields from SFDC and merge them into a pretty PDF (or something of the like) that could then be distributed to users outside of SFDC? If not out of the box -- is there some type of free app?

Is the tool you mentioned not only for extracting metadata? From how the question was phrased I assumed op is looking for a way to generate documents from data on a specific record. I am yet to look into Schema Lister in the toolkit, so I might be wrong.
