I've come across a problem that I feel quite silly coming across. I'm not sure if there's something incredibly basic I'm missing, or if I'm going about this the wrong way.
I'm attempting to pull lists of donors so we can create Year End Tax statements. I have different sets of criteria, and am utilizing the Contacts with Opportunities report type to create my base lists.
My reports have some basic filtering on close dates, communication preferences, as well as some cross filters to exclude people who gave to events, specific campaigns, etc.
However, I'm noticing that my results are yielding more records than I need as opportunities are being doubled based on the number of people in that household. For example: I have a household of Mr. and Mrs Smith. Mr Smith personally gave 5 gifts this year. Mrs Smith, didn't give any, but she has a "Household" contact role on all the opportunities. The Contacts with Opportunities report will give me 5 Gifts under Mr. Smith, but ALSO 5 gifts under Mrs. Smith, simply by her being a contact role on those gifts. What I need is to just see the gifts given directly by that individual, not additional/duplicate gifts because of the donors contact role on that opportunity.
I hope this makes sense. I'm having a hard time understanding what i'm doing wrong. Is there a way, based on just contacts with opportunities, to only pull a list of opportunities based only on the person who gave the gift?
Makes sense. We purchased Apsona and Apsona Multi-step reporting to allow for complex reporting that is more robust than standard Salesforce reports. They also have an add on called Email and Document Merge which can be used for EOCY tax letters, etc, though we haven't set that up yet.
No promise that this will meet all your needs, but you could try creating a custom report type of Contacts with Opportunities and Contact Roles. This would give you access to the role label on the Contact Role so that you can exclude duplicates due to the Household Member soft credit. But you may end up with other problems - other duplicate oppties from multiple soft credits on the gift, or missing oppties because there are no soft credits on the oppty.
