Contacts related to Accounts

When I set up a contact, and leave the Account field blank, the "Account" becomes the "(last name) household"... I'm confused about when I should put that person's company in the "account" field... or is there another field to input the company that person works for? For instance, I want to put a company in a contact's record, but also relate that contact and his wife and kids to a "household" - there must be a right way to appropriate both?

    Nearly all of our contacts have a household account. The exception to this rule is when the only relationship we have to the contact is through their business, eg city council member, company CEO or assistant. For these individuals, we enter their company name in the Account Field as well as the Affiliation Field.

     

    Now, if any of these individuals were to have a child participate in our program or make a gift, we edit their contact record, delete the company from their account field and save the record so their Houshold is automatically created. The affiliation to their company still remains.
