We have a team of operations that needs to be able to add opportunity team members to opportunities they do not own, but we cannot put them in a role at the top of the hierarchy because we don't want them to have access to private records because of the sharing rules via role hierarchy.
Is it possible if we add that operations person as an opportunity team member themselves? Would that grant them access to add others?

Yes - we figured out we can create a permission set that grants modify all to the opportunity object instead of creating a role.
