New to Salesforce here, and I have been struggling to find info that provides a succinct definition of what a Source Report is. Any help appreciated.

Hi Tom,
A source report usually refers to a regular report which is used as the source of data for another mechanism. For example, you can set up snapshot reporting which copies aggregate data from a report into another object, and that would become the "source report" for that particular snapshot.
