Hide Contact Record only if Picklist Value is selected

I would like to set contact records to only be visible by Admins if the status is set to "Left Company" and saved. We want to retain the contacts and preserve their relationship with other objects. I've found one option is to build a process that changes the record type when the record is saved with Left Company so that only admin profiles can view that record type on its own, but the contacts will show as read only on the related objects. Is there a better way to accomplish this?
