We have different business units that would be involved in one opportunity.  We have looked at opportunity splits, however, reporting would still show the entire amount of the opportunity to one owner. We're trying to come up with  a different solution, creating multiple opportunites for one sale for each business unit was one idea so everyone involved would be able to get credit for their portion of the sale.

Is there a way to mange cross opportunity record types where there is a parent child relationship for opportunities shared across business units?

I would strongly suggest that if you have multiple people working a single deal, you use a single Opportunity and Splits.  Assuming you can tell which users are in which business unit, you can build splits reports, summarized by (or filtered by) the business unit of the Split Owner.  That way, your corporate metrics are also accurate.
