How do I access a Custom Object field to complete a Mass Email?

So I want to complete a Mass Email, using a field from a Custom Object.  When I go to select the field the only two objects that are accessible are Accounts & Contacts.  Is there any other way to reach the field in my Custom Object?  Or how do I need to re-construct to make this feature available?

    Does the contact object reference the custom object?  If it does, you can write custom cross object formula fields to bring the value from the custom object onto the contact object.

     

    If it is a custom object that references the contact, that is more difficult.
