I have used the setup informatin found here in this Salesforce knowledge article (notice I am not at this point attempting to update mailing address as found in this help link - which is a tad outdated but still useful). The procudure should be similar I would think:

I have done the following in the Account object:
To create a custom Contact Lookup field on Accounts, please follow the steps below:
Setup... select Object Manager...select Account object....
1. Fields & Relationships section - I selected New
2. Select Lookup Relationship as the data type then hit on next.
3. Select Contact on the "Related To" drop-down menu. Then hit next.
4. Field Label is the name that will be displayed on the layout; you can change that to Primary Contact.
5. Field Name is an internal reference. By default, the Name will just be the same as the Label.
6. Hit next.
7. Make sure this is available on your layout.
8. Hit Save.
I have already created a text field in the Contact object titled "Test Field" and entered some sample data (and saved it).
In the Account object I have created a Formula field like this:
1. Click New to create a New Custom field.
2. Choose Formula as the data type and hit next.
3. Enter a Field Label titled "Contact Test Field), and choose Text as the Formula Return Type. Hit Next.
4. Then using the "Advanced Formula Editor" I enterd this formula and it was clear of any errors:
Primary_Contact__r.Test_Field__c
After saving the Formula Field (I only save to the Account Layouts and not any Contact layouts)., I then open up the Account that I have updated its Contact with the information in the Text field, and it does NOT return anything to the test field in the Account object.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Mel,
My answer to your above query is Yes.
1)Open any account record 2)Populate the Primary Contact lookup with the contact record 3)Make sure Primary contact you populated has the mailing address. 3)After saving, check the formula field -mailing address you created on account. This must have been populated with mailing address from primary contact.
2 Important points to note here.
1)Populate Primary Contact on Account 2)Primary contact should have mailing address.
If you still have any issues, paste the screenshot of mailling adrees from Primary Contact , and the formula field from the account record.
