Calling data in salesforce thru webservices

we have one requirement like we want salesforce only for UI purpose but actual data needs to be stored or retrieved from some other database.Is it possible if yes what are the pros and cons to achieve this? also i would like to know the high level steps to achieve this...Do we need to call the webservices in this case??

    Thanks Jeff for the quick response.

     

    Is there any salesforce guideline available to achieve this step by step...One more thing do we need to create object and fields in salesforce as well ?? but we are not going to store the data in sfdc...Please suggest..
