lead status age

I have a busines requirement to allow the reporting on the number of days that a leads spends in each status.. (3 days in new, 5 in contacted, 11 in nurture, etc). Additionally, I need to show how many days the lead has been in the current status (this can be in a report.. not necessarily field on the screen). We will eventually need to do the same thing on opportunity stages.. so far we have created custom fields for each lead status. We have a trigger that fires and looks at lead history and populates those fine.. no idea yet on displaying days in current status. There are a lof of eccentricities to this, I know, and we have discussed those with the business.. We just really need help with number of days in current status.. open to all suggestions! Thanks!

    Are you capturing the Date of the last/most recent Staus change?  If you are you could create a custom field and select

     

    Datatype = Formula

     

    Result = Number

     

    Formula = 

    TODAY() - Last_Status_Change__c
