How do you filter a report to ensure that the record ID only appears once?

For example, if you're filtering on a related object (contacts) and it pulls a specific account onto the report more than once (ID is duplicated) but you need to know total total accounts (without counting a specific account more than once) - what filter criteria can you use to ensure an accurate report?
