Referencing the start date of a custom fiscal period in a formula

How do I add a validation rule to an Opportunity Close Date to ensure it is in the current fiscal period?

 

I found this formula:

 

AND(

 

  OR (

 

     ISNEW(),

 

     ISCHANGED( CloseDate )),

 

  CloseDate < DATE( YEAR(TODAY()), MONTH(TODAY()), 1) )

 

this doesn't work when the start date of a fiscal period is say 30 March.
