This is amazing to be able to download the data and try to make a better Viz than they did! It's weird how they grouped the ethnicities. I think the groupings themselves should be a topic of conversation in addition to the data!

I was talking with a group of Data Analyst’s during a DataView Academy Tableau Expert Community meeting last evening. The subject of what is enough content when creating a Viz came up once again?  In other words what contributes to an effective Visualization? We rehashed the age old question on minimizing or adding fancy to your dashboards, what is most helpful to the viewers?

Our discussion in summary:

There is an understanding the content of your Viz depends on the audience but, in most cases answering the question/requirement is enough. Why get fancy with charts that have to be explained, color over kill or show too much in the Dashboard. Yes extremely busy Dashboards are still being created even with this common knowledge being everywhere?

Consensus:

Provide the minimum don’t try to showoff you Tableau knowledge. (Get feedback & Update the Viz)

Understand your audience’s chart digestion (Even box & whisker-plot has to be explained to some)

Ask does color everywhere really help explain the requirements or just over simulate the viewer’s brain?

Yes there may be a time and place for a fancy Viz but, the 80/20 rule seems to still prevail toward minimizing content which simplifies understanding you message.

Your thoughts?

Hope you are having or had a great day! If you still are not using Tableau 2021.1 you are missing out on some very helpful features! Although the video I am sharing was created before the release of 2020.1 it contains a good explanation of features you will love and could make you a hero at work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V66E25y7Jzc Enjoy - Bill
