Hi everyone,

I hope you're all doing well!

My name is Hollie Patterson. I'm a programmer/analyst in the K12 space for a school district in Colorado. I've reached out to my National K12 TUG as well but hoping that perhaps my Higher Ed compatriots may also be a resource.

Our team is currently planning a migration from Tableau Server to Tableau Cloud, and we’re looking to connect with others who have already made this transition. If you or your organization has experience with this move, we’d greatly appreciate the opportunity to hear about your journey—what worked well, what challenges you faced, and any recommendations you might have to help us avoid common pitfalls.

Specifically, we’re interested in learning about:

  • Your overall migration strategy and timeline
  • Lessons learned during the transition
  • Any tools, resources, or support that were especially helpful
  • How your user training and adoption went
  • Performance differences you’ve noticed post-migration

If you're open to sharing your experience, please feel free to reply to this email or reach out directly. We’d love to set up a quick chat or even just exchange notes via email.

Thanks in advance for your time and support!

Best regards,

Hollie Patterson

    Hi @Hollie Patterson

Here's a TUG recording that might help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjGhHOTx4AU

Tableau have an API so you can write your own script, they also have a tool called Content Migration Tool (CMT).

Biztory have a tool called TabMove which usually performs better, and they have TONS of experience doing migrations from Server to Cloud

I have applied for and am still waiting to get approved for my Tableau for Teachers license and to join the Tableau for Teachers user group. However, I need to build out my syllabus now for an upcoming class and am up against a deadline for this. Even just an outline of the materials available to instructors would be super helpful. I have viewed this page but am hoping for more than a one or two sentence description of materials. Thanks!

I was able to get access when I applied for a licensed couple of years ago, Tableau for Teaching. There are many materials, and deciding on the topics can be overwhelming. Best Wishes :)

I am wondering which role other instructors assign to their students. Last time around, I used Explorer (can publish). I started that way again this semester, but I am wondering if Creator is a better option, given that users can do more with that. I am trying to figure out if there are downsides.

Any thoughts?

    From our Team:

Here are some super helpful Tableau Help articles that can be passed along to the instructor. Lots of info about what users can/cannot do with certain permissions and roles and different scenarios. Unfortunately, we cannot view instructors' TOL sites to see how most are setting up their users, however, I believe students are mostly set up as Explorers:Permissions

    >

    Set Users' Site Roles

    <

    https://help.tableau.com/current/online/en-us/users_site_roles.htm

    >

Extra note here: Depends on whether instructors want students to add/edit

data sources: "Creators can access the full functionality of Tableau Prep

Builder, Tableau Desktop, and Tableau Server/Onliner to create content.

Explorers have access to a subset of Creator capabilities via Tableau

Server/Online only, to author new content based on existing published data

    sources and workbooks."

Strongly suggest pointing our instructors to the Online Guide in the

Academic curriculum. We step them through the special permissions scenarios

    for managing assignments and projects.

    Hi Clark,

The academic team is likely working on getting through requests that came through over the holiday season. If you haven't done so already, you can reach the Academic Team at tft@tableau.com if you have follow up questions on when your licenses will be issued.

(1). I calculated Cpk to each "Spec-2" with formula

(2). In order to count how many Cpk > 1.33, Cpk < 1 and 1<Cpk<1.33 , I created "Cpk Grade"

(3). I use "Cpk Grade" to create donut chart, but color proportion never change

May be my method is not a right direction to realize the donut chart. Can you help to realize color change with Q`ty of each Cpk Grade (Outer Donut) ?

Thanks!

Donut chart showing Cpk Grade( Calculated filed ) to outer Donut with color promotion not change issue.

Is it possible to add LSL , Mean , USL as reference line as dot line showed ?

I tried to add reference line but failed because of "Bins- Global" are discrete.

Are you looking for something like thisAre you looking for something like thisI made the bins continuous and edited the axis to have 'Independent axis ranges for each row or column'.I made the bins continuous and edited the axis to have 'Independent axis ranges for each row or column'. For the reference lines, I set the scope for 'per pane' and aligned each at the top so it is easier to read.

    Hi Joe,

It looks like your students have effective permissions that are not allowing them to edit this workbook. If these students are the only ones accessing this project and you are comfortable letting them web edit, find the row in that screenshot that says "All Users". From there, you can double-click on the box underneath the edit icon to activate that green check. From there, select the blue "Save" icon.

If you want to give one student editing permissions while leaving the other as is, you can select "Add Group/User Role" and add specific permissions in for the given student. More info here: https://help.tableau.com/current/online/en-us/permissions.htm

Specifically, I am trying to figure out what I have done to make my data set slow in some situations.

... I can connect to and do some nice visuals but am not sure what I might be doing wrong with respect to performance. I have a star schema data base table that has some 7 million observations with 14 or so linked end point tables (they are joined with a single column key auto number from the base file to the end points) that works nicely in a PowerBi setting but when I do certain filters it bogs down and calculates for 10+ min and then returns no results. I am not very sure how to start to crack this. I am sorry but I do not have a set of data I can share in this example at this time.

...again, a recommendation on training or video series on performance would be great.

thank you -KJ

    Hi KJ,

Are you connected via a Live connection or are you using an Extract? If you are connecting using a Live connection, then you are at the mercy of the time it takes the database to query and return the results. I deal with datasets around the same size as you are describing and I use an extract. It takes some initial time for Tableau to create the extract but is optimized and, once created, you should notice a performance improvement. Extracts do not return "live results", it is a snapshot based on when you created the extract.

I work in higher education as well - we use Canvas (not sure if you are similar). Hopefully this helps - let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks,

I'm new to Tableau Online and am trying to incorporate into my class this semester. Primarily I'd like to use it for group cases I'm going to assign. Unfortunately I'm stymied at the 1st step. Uploading the data sources (all excel files) for my student groups to access.

I've read everything I can and it seemed like I needed to use Tableau Desktop, connect to my Tableau Online account - which I did successfully, open a Workbook, connect to the data I want to use and then Publish that data to Tableau Online.

However when I go to Publish I receive this error:

We cannot publish this data source because we are unable to establish a connection.

Please double check your data source is properly set up.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

You need to extract the data. That error is telling you that you are trying to connect Tableau Online live to an Excel spreadsheet that lives on your laptop or somewhere else on your network. There are ways to do that, but in this case you want to create an extract and publish that as a data source to Online.
