Newbie, Tableau Server

New to Tableau? Looking for the best resources for new server deployments and a place to ask questions? You found it.

Hello,

In past days, I've observerd the vizqlservice consuming high RAM. The server has got 256GB of memory and has peaked at 86% yesterday.

I need to dig deep down to know why this is happening. The backgrounders on the server are all spinning (busy).

Any help would be appreciated.

Tableau Server RAM consumption: run-vizqlserver.exe consuming RAM nearly 80%.Thanks,

Tariq.

Hi, TSM restart would work for a limited time. Change in the configuration keys is more recommended. You will have to monitor the RAM use. I recommend it to be 70% at average. If after you change the configuration keys, you still have level over 70%, I would suggest to increase RAM.

If this post resolves the question, would you be so kind to "Select as Best"?. This will help other users find the same answer/resolution and help community keep track of answered questions. Thank you.

Hi, I want to introduce tableau server to my company, installed as trial, its difficult on those minor configurations, need some guidance

background: I had set up a windows server 2019, meet all minimum required spec. Tableau Server, database, and prep on same location for developing. This server and company network are all connected by VPN, did not tick the 'Enable SSL for server communication'

2 problems occurs:

1. Prep can be connected to tableau server, only when I try it [ON] the server itself, but when I try to connect to server with prep on my own laptop, I couldn't

For example: [http://<win-servername>:8000/], when i try to connect out of the server, it appears error:

[Check that the server is running and that the URL is correct. If this host is using the http protocol, make sure to include "http://" in the URL.]

if I type in the server IP instead [http://192.168.XX.XX], it appears error

[The required SSL certificate might be missing or doesn't match the Tableau Server certificate for "http://192.168.XX.XX". Contact your System Administrator.]

which part of setting did I missed?

2. Suggestion on tableau mobile. Since company all connected through VPN, does it mean if I want to log in through tableau mobile, i have to connect VPN on my mobile as well? Or? Any suggestion? As each time on the move, I want to view my dashboard on mobile, I must connect to VPN first is quite inconvenient. Yes, currently I am unable to connect to tableau mobile as well.

hope can settle this 2 problems with your guidance,

thanks a lot

    1. Regarding your first question, I wonder if you have try the answer in this knowledge base article: https://kb.tableau.com/articles/issue/error-check-that-the-server-is-running-and-that-the-url-is-correct

    2. The second question is interesting. Since Tableau Server is installed on premises, you could have several options:

    a. Your current option is good, you are protecting your info with a VPN. Your info is protected by the VPN and by the Tableau login.

    b. You could ask to your IT team, to create some forwarding rules (NAT) and be able to access your Tableau Server from the Internet. This would require, they assign you some subdomain (i.e. http://tableau.yourcompany.com) and to open firewall to external communications using ports 443, and 80.

    Check this:

    https://help.tableau.com/current/guides/everybody-install/en-us/everybody_admin_config_ssl.htm

If this post assists in resolving the question, please "Upvote" it or "Select as Best" if it resolves the question. This will help other users find the same answer/resolution. Thank you.

We are looking to upgrade to 2025.3.1.  Has anyone experienced issues with this version related to Snowflake connections?

There is another release 2025.3.2 that was released on January 29, 2026, but it doesn't mention that the issue with Snowflake connections has been resolved.

We haven't done testing yet...determining whether or not we should upgrade from 2025.1.7 to 2025.3.1.  I've done some searches in Google, but haven't found anything concrete regarding when the issue will be resolved.  It mentions in the "Known Issues" that the status is "Solution Scheduled".

The documentation only says that the port for tabadmincontroller (default 8850) must be opened to Internet. But a full opening of this port is not possible for security reasons. It could be opened only for specific addresses, to which the connexion should be initiated by our server. That's why I would need the list of tableau.com servers or adresses accessed in the activation step

I can do a quick fix by editing the axis and making it fixed for 12 months in a year, but this creates a problem because this chart is part of a dashboard that can be filtered by year. Is there a way I can create a date value where there is none? For example, if Product B has 5 sales in June and 6 sales in July, but no sales any other month of the year, (there are no values in the data set for the other months i.e. no sales values, nor date values), how can I create a date variable with null or "0" values to fill the series and show up in the graph? One that can ultimately be filtered by year on the dashboard. Some of our products have sales each month, but there are many that do not, and only the dates when the sales are made are recorded.

When I tried clicking on the date to select "show missing values", that option does not appear, because the dates themselves are not associated with product B (I'm assuming).

you can use "BINS" and "LOD", just need to create :

    1. calculated field named Day : day([sales_date])
    2. create bin from Day (right click from field Day and click Create and choose Bins) named Day_Bin
    3. for size of bins, input 1
    4. if you want to show value total sales per day then create calculated field using LOD (Level of Detail) and choose Fixed Function, named your new field with Total sales per Day

    {Fixed Year([Sales_Date]),Month([Sales_Date]), Day_Bin:Sum(ifnull([Sales],0))}

and then in canvas colums you can put : Year([Sales_Date]),Month([Sales_Date]), Day_Bin

and in canvas rows you can put : sum([Total sales per Day])

Hello,

Hope all are doing well.

We need to extend EBS storage for our tableau server. What are the steps I need to take?

1 - tsm stop

2 - add a storage blocka and merge.

3 - ec2 restart?

4 - tsm start.

OR

1-tsm stop

2-ec2 shutdown.

3-add a storage block and merge.

4-start EC2.

5-tsm start.

    Hi @Tariq Aziz ,

I would like to add one point here, first stop the Tableau server (tsm stop) before making any changes on the tableau server deployed machine, also make sure that the MAC address, IP address and hostname of the machine are static. Any change in these address will make Tableau server in degrade / unlicensed state because tableau server licenses are mapped with Mac address of the machine.

    Thanks & Regards

Hello Guys,

We recently deployed our Tableau Server (Prod, QA). There are clients who can't refresh their extracts due to data-source connection issues. The error displayed when connecting through the server is a missing driver. When I tested the connection using 'test connection' it fails instantly.

The servers are in a different AWS env than before where teams were able to connect to their data bricks databases.

I pinged the database server from the production machine but the request timed out. When pinged by the QA machine, the request succeeded. I believe there are some issues related to the change in aws env (IP whitelisting or etc.).

Database: databricks database.

Driver: Simba ODBC driver for databricks.

Driver version on server machines: Simba ODBC 2.6.5

Driver version on user machines: Simba ODBC 2.6.25

Any help in the direction I could take will be helpful.

Based on the information provided, it seems like there are a few potential issues that could be causing the data-source connection issues with your Tableau Server and Databricks database:

    1. IP Whitelisting: As you mentioned, there could be an issue related to IP whitelisting in the new AWS environment. Verify that the IP address of the Tableau Server is whitelisted on the Databricks database server and that the necessary ports are open.
    2. Driver Version: The driver version on the server machines is different from the user machines, which could be causing compatibility issues. Make sure that the same version of the driver is installed on both the Tableau Server and the user machines.
    3. Network Connectivity: The fact that the ping request to the database server timed out when coming from the production machine, but succeeded when coming from the QA machine, suggests that there may be network connectivity issues that are preventing the Tableau Server from reaching the Databricks database.
    4. Firewall: Check if there is any firewall blocking the connection.
    5. Permission: Check if the Tableau Server has the necessary permissions to access the Databricks database.
    6. Configuration: Check if the ODBC driver is correctly configured and the necessary environment variables are set.
    7. Third-Party Security : If you are running any third-party security solutions, check if it is blocking the connection.

You can try to troubleshoot the issue by checking the log files of the Tableau server and the Databricks database, as well as trying to connect to the database using a different tool (such as the Simba ODBC Driver Manager) to see if the issue is specific to Tableau Server.

You can also contact Tableau Support or Databricks Support for additional help in troubleshooting the issue.

We have prod, DR and QA instances setup. As far as I know there's no automatic way of switching to DR in case Prod is down. Please guide how does the manual switch happen in the Tableau Server?

The prod and DR are hosted in EC2 on aws.

Thanks,

Tariq.

@Tariq Aziz I assume you have an active DNS record which points to your production Tableau Instance? If that is the case build you test / DR server to mirror your production instance then you all need to do in the event of of an outage is point the DNS record to your test instance. Downtime would be around a couple of minutes.

We used to do this whenever we completed any upgrades on the servers before we migrated to cloud.

I have a big table ( almost 300 fields). They are daily event counts for an app. I want to create a parameter and if a user inputs an event name my cohort table will update according to the input. I don't want to manually write every field name (I will connect my data source to BigQuery). Because if I add a new event to the table I don't want to manually add them every time.

I tried doing something like

CASE [Parameter 1]

WHEN [Parameter 1] THEN [STR([Parameter 1])]

END

But it's not working. Do I have any workaround for this?

Hello everyone,

I have a problem that I've been dealing with for a few days. Before that, I would like to briefly explain the goal and the idea. I created four dashboards with the same data source. The data source is an Excel file that is currently on the local drive. The goal was that we would upload the dashboards to Tableau Server and whenever the data source changes, Tableau Server will automatically change it as well at the click of a button. So since we're working with extracts, we would just refresh the dashboard in Tableau Server and that's it.

Unfortunately, we could not achieve this goal because the Excel file was only online on Sharepoint and a direct connection between Tableau Server and Sharepoint online is impossible. That's why we saved the Excel file locally - as mentioned earlier - and tried to upload it again to Tableau Server and update it. Unfortunately, the UNC path didn't work either. Unfortunately, I cannot update the extracts on Tableau Server and I keep getting an error message. I suspect it's because Tableau Server still doesn't have access to the Excel file and can't read it.

Should I perhaps proceed differently or store the file somewhere else?

Thanks in advance!

Your IT dept has to help you more unfortunately. The easiest solution is that the Excel file should be accessed by a UNC path that both you can use from your computer and it's the same UNC path (obviously) from Tableau Server. If your IT guys can't make that happen then you can't automatically update and you're missing a lot of great features of Tableau - mainly the "hands off, automatic data updates"
