Tableau User Group board | Boston (Massachusetts)

Hi all,

Around October 2016 I was speaking with BTUG members, and they brought up an app that allows you to export the calculations behind all of the fields in a workbook.  I've checked through my notes, and helpfully only wrote "Tableau App".  Google is also not helping.  Does anyone have an idea of what this was, whether it's what was mentioned before or another way you have of pulling together calculations?

The underlying goal is to be able to see what data is being used in what workbook, so that if we have a change on field A, we know we'll have to update Calculation 3 which references field A.

Thanks for any brainstorming ideas you may have!

Claire

Late to this thread but wanted to share in case it helps anyone still looking. The site ExportCalculatedFields does both things you're describing.

Upload your .twb or .twbx and it pulls out all your calculated fields with their formulas across the whole workbook. It also surfaces field dependencies, so you can see which calculations reference which fields. Really useful for exactly the scenario you mentioned where a source field changes and you need to know what downstream calculations are affected.

Hi Anthony - just saw the note about the next TUG. Are these going to be held at 2pm going forward or will they alternate between a during work and post work schedule?

Thanks for all you do with the TUG!!

    Hi Kate,

We will continue to alternate between work and post-work hours.  It just so happened that the last few were during the work day.  I will take your comment to heart and try to plan our November meeting for after hours!

I am trying to add new columns to a worksheet to do a simple difference calculation but am having issues.  Let's say I have 100 rows of data and 4 columns across the top.  The rows are the investment name, the columns are the fund name, and the sum data are % returns.  I am trying to add new columns that show the difference between each fund.  Any ideas?  It is difficult to do this with the raw data before pulling into Tableau.

For instance:

Thank you!

Investment Name     Fund A     Fund B     Fund C     Fund D                    Difference between Fund A and Fund B...etc

ABC Corp                    2%          1%          3.5%          .57%

CBA Corp                     1%          1%          3.5%          .27%

BBB Corp                      2%          1%          4.5%          .37%

DCA Corp                      3%          1%          2.5%          .57%

    Hi Michael,

I would like to attach the sample workbook with the difference between Fund A and Fund B,

and I wish it will be helpful for you.

    I think 5 measures on worksheet(% returns of A, B, C, D and difference between A and B)

    should be defined individually.

    Best regards,

    Hideki

    Hey Rachel-

Yes, I was planning on sending out a confirmation today. You are fully registered! We purposefully didn't put a registration response email on the form to save everyone an email...but obviously that was confusing. Noted for next time; Thank you for the feedback!

    Best,

    Gordon
