Come join us for a holiday-themed HETUG (Higher Education Tableau User Group) meeting!

December 7, 2021, 3pm â€“ 4:30pm EST

What's under the tree?

  • To pump up the holiday goodness, we're going to meet 2, yes, 2, community members: Crystal Baker (Indiana University) and Ginny Moench (AppState).
  • Roy Lee (NYU) will show how Tableau Prep is helping reduce the pain in prepping faculty data at NYU Stern.
  • If you've ever checked out Ginny Moench's Tableau Public, you'll see that she does some cool holiday-themed Tableau work, including MadLibs! Ginny's going to show us two different ways to set up MadLibs in Tableau.
  • We'll wrap up with time for HETUG members to chat with each other and maybe holiday MadLib a little.

I have been asked to do a retention project for one of our departments, to include length of stay and tracking student movement to other programs, but we don't cohort our students in our system and this is my first time on this sort of project. Does anyone have experience cohorting students in Tableau or do you apply a start term to students on the tables before bringing them into Tableau? (We don't have a data warehouse so I have to export tables into Excel/Access anyway before connecting to Tableau).

    Thanks for any tips!

    Melinda.

Many institutions participate in standard student outcomes surveys as part of their provincial, state, or accrediting body requirements.  In BC, we participate in Student Outcomes, including Baccalaureate, Diploma and Certificate, and Apprenticeship (we also used to do a survey for graduates of Developmental programs).  Are you using Tableau or Tableau Public to report these results?  If so, would you like to share (links or screenshots, etc)? Please indicate the survey and the tool used.

Wasiq Ali shared this Alberta Graduate Outcome Survey dashboard in another discussion: http://public.tableau.com/profile/wasiq.ali#!/vizhome/GraduateOutcomesSurvey20112012_0/AlbertaGOS

    Thanks, Kristen.

I have also attached screenshots of our surveys that we do not publish on tableau public. As a data visualization specialist, I apologize for using pie charts.

    The three surveys include:

    - Student Satisfaction Survey

    - Graduate Survey

    - Leaver Survey (Students who leave the college before graduating. Most of them transfer to a university.)

Let me know if you have any questions.

Has anyone created a table of contents?  If so, would you be willing to share?

I'm working on one that will be the landing page for our Server users (attached - VERY rough, in progress).  Because this is going to be accessed from our Tableau Server web login, I just used HTML actions to do the linking.

Hi everyone,

We are starting to talk about using Tableau Public at our institution.  Are you using it, or have you decided NOT to use it? Please comment with your thoughts and any examples of how you are using Tableau Public.

We are currently building a Langara FAQ for distribution through Tableau Public. This will contain high-level summaries of the most commonly requested headcount, seatcount and demographics data for public consumption. It will replace the static PDF Langara at a Glance report currently posted on Langara's IR webpage.

I used it in a prior life when I worked in an academic program, and was the only (non-research) Tableau user at the university.

It worked reasonably well for non-confidential things like what courses would be offered in the coming years.

I'm not quite sure what their license terms are these days for Public - those are worth checking into. I'm a bit uncomfortable with putting anything on Public as I feel it opens up a risk of making an honest mistake and uploading the wrong dataset (especially if you have both Tableau Desktop Pro for internal stuff, and Tableau Public for external stuff).
