I have a created an example data set/workbook to represent the issue I'm currently facing. To begin, I have a data source that shows all the students enrolled in each class being offered. The "CLASS INFO" column has a class, then all the students in it below until there is another class listed.
My job is to create a dashboard with two tables: one for the classes (filtered by subject) and one for the student names (filtered by their status). I created calculated fields to separate the student names from the class names. I then created another calculated field from the class names so that each student has the class they're enrolled in in the same row. Below is an image of what these calculated fields look like when applied to a visual.
Lastly, the dashboard displays the class table on top, the student table below it, with the filters on the side. The Class Status filter is for the Class table, the Student Status filter is for the Student table, and the date filter is for both.
The issue I'm running into is finding a way to filter the bottom visual by the top. For example, if I change the Class Status filter so that English is the only class left, I want the Student table to show only the students in the English class. I've tried to use the "use as filter" option on the Class visual, but it does not give the desired effect. Below is a picture of my dashboard.
So my question is, how can I filter the bottom table by the class names visible in the top table? I'll also attach my workbook. As a note, the company I work for will not allow me to update Tableau. So I cannot open a workbook that has been upgraded to the newest version of tableau. Thank you for all the help.
