I know this must be a fairly common problem but my google sleuthing is not giving me an answer I can understand. So here goes, I'm using an excel document on my MacBook pro as the data source for our public workbooks. When I last used the workbook everything connected and worked fine. Now, I'm working on updating our data source from the rest of the year and when I try to save to the workbook to the new data source I keep getting an error message about extraction (below). But the online instructions that say there should be a link to extract isn't showing up at all on my interface and I can't find out how to make my excel document work for the dashboard, could someone explain how to fix?
Data Extract Required
The Tableau server you are publishing to does not permit external database connections. Use the Data menu to create an extract for the following data source:
<data-source-name>
Thank you!!
I was having the same problem today too. My data source was a Google spreadsheet. I tried leaving the computer alone for a few hours -- that has worked for me when I've had this issue in the past, but not today. So after reading through a few other suggestions here, I renamed both the overall Google spreadsheet and the individual worksheet that I was using, went to Tableau's Data Source tab and added the renamed sheet as a new connection, removed the old one and then dragged my new table into the window, then used the "Save to Tableau Public As" method instead of a regular save -- and it finally worked! Hope this helps someone.
