I'm not a big SharePoint fan, but alot of people use it to manage shared lists of data. It would be helpful if Tableau could connect directly to SharePoint lists.
The only workaround I've seen is really slow and unreliable - making an access database that has linked tables via the SharePoint API, and then pointing Tableau at the access database. FWIW, we're using SharePoint 2007.

I didn't know that method was slow and unreliable - in what ways is it so?
What I referred to here: http://www.tableausoftware.com/forum/sharepoint-list-data-source was just clicking on some sort of export/view link in Sharepoint's web interface.
