Hi, We generally create a tableau view and make it point to a data extract in order to display data. When i tried to open the workbook in notepad, i witnessed data like, data extract name each view in a workbook being connected to. At present we are creating seperate views for each clients pointing to individual client extracts. I am in an idea to automate this. Is it possible that we can have a common variable in the Tableau work sheet(Opened via notepad) , that we can pass the name of the extract we need to connect the workbook to. In that case the workbook must be dynamically able to connect to any available extract that i will be passing as a parameter.

This cannot be done with a variable. You might be able to write a custom application that would swap the data extracts. A packaged workbook (.twbx) is really just a zip file, so you could pro grammatically create multiple packaged workbooks with different extracts.
