Even when I upgraded the user to Big Query 'Data Owner' in Google Console - Tableau still wasn't happy. So what is the best 'read only' type permission that will work for Tableau - and prevent any user changing data from Tableau.

    Hi Kaihaan

    Tableau does use some intelligence when connecting to data sources so some names may change eg _ replaced with space. Please refer to this article for further understanding https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/data_clean_adm.htm.

     

    As for an alert/message about 'writing to database', I can't comment, but as Michael says, Tableau does not change anything about the data in the underlying source - it is read only. It may be the 'writing to database' appeared at the point it was creating an extract on the Tableau server, so it was telling you it was writing a copy of the data to Tableau's 'in memory' database...
