we are not using the tableau app on the iPad because the viz is embedded in salesforce and salesforce in the browser is a way better user experience than the salesforce mobile app on the iPad devices.

It has been quite some time since you posted this, but I would like to respond in case anyone else has the same problem.
It may be that Safari has something to do with disabling third-party cookies by default, which is interfering with authentication.
You may want to try using a different browser or changing the settings on your mobile device (see the link below for instructions on how to do this).
