I am looking for a solution to backup journeys, automations, etc. I know there are apps for that (e.g. stashr.io, Gearset), but Salesforce says that most companies DIY with OOTB features like the API and Automation Studio. Is that a one and done configuration or would you need to make changes every time a new journey or automation is created? I know the apps are expensive, so I'd like to DIY, but not sure how complicated that is. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Yes, you can build a DIY backup solution using the SFMC REST/SOAP APIs and Automation Studio, but it's not a one-time setup. While the backup automation can run on a schedule, you'll need to ensure it captures newly created assets (Journeys, Automations, Emails, Data Extensions, etc.) and update it if Salesforce introduces new asset types or API changes. If you have the technical resources, DIY is a cost-effective option, but tools like Gearset or stashr.io provide versioning, restore capabilities, and change tracking with much less maintenance.
